What is the difference between horizontal and vertical roles?

Horizontal roles concern the responsibilities that an employee takes or is assigned from his position. For example, a consultant will unite the roles of expert, project manager and account manager in his job performance. We call the competencies required for this "hard skills", because they are trainable.

Vertical roles are linked to the problem-solving skills required to successfully exercise the horizontal roles. They therefore refer to Baarda role model. We call those competencies "soft skills", because they cannot be trained.
